Can you store licence plates as a car wash? (GDPR explained)
Yes. A licence plate on its own is not personal data — you have no access to the vehicle register and cannot derive a person from it. So you may collect and keep it for your own statistics and marketing. You inform visitors with a camera-surveillance sticker at the entrance and your privacy statement; you get those ready-made.
We process the camera images on-premise: the photo is converted to the plate on the spot and deleted immediately — only the plate and the timestamp are kept. Only when a customer links their own email address to a plate (for a discount) do the GDPR rules apply, and for that we ask permission properly in advance. Fully privacy-proof, without the hassle.

Do I need a special plate camera or expensive ANPR equipment?
No. No special plate camera and no expensive onboard ANPR: an ordinary camera (which we supply) plus our own licence plate recognition software is enough. That keeps the barrier low, even for a smaller car wash or wash tunnel.
How accurate is the licence plate recognition?
With a well-lit entrance it works close to perfectly: virtually every plate is read and processed cleanly. The recognition is tuned specifically for the setup at a car wash. Lighting is the deciding factor — a dark entrance makes plates hard to read, so make sure the entrance is well lit if you're open after dark. Foreign plates are read, but we can't look up make and model for them (those only exist in the Dutch vehicle register).
